At Pacific Science Center we rely on volunteers and interns to help fulfil our mission to inspire lifelong science learning while providing vital assistance in all areas of Pacific Science Center operations. Whether you're interested in hands-on interaction with exhibits and guests, or something behind the scenes, we have opportunities for you. Internships are offered on a rolling basis throughout the year in a variety of departments. Internships are an exciting way for current college and graduate students to gain real-world skills.

Discovery Corps Program (Teen Program with volunteer and paid positions)
Discovery Corps is a youth development program that puts young people on the front line of Pacific Science Center's mission to inspire a lifelong interest in science, math and technology.

Special Event Volunteer (Adult Program)
Do you love interacting with people? How about being part of an event? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you. Pacific Science Center seeks Special Event volunteers to help execute our year-round special events. Such events include: Research Weekends, exhibit openings, Science On Wheels evening programming, and various off-site summer fairs and festivals. Volunteer roles vary and may include welcoming guests, setting-up tables and chairs, checking-in guests, manning information tables and more. Hours vary, but primarily take place during evenings and weekends.
Maker Space Volunteer (Adult Program)
Do you love making things, tinkering with objects, building with mechanical parts, or experimenting with electronics? How about sharing your passion for making things with others? Pacific Science Center seeks creative volunteers to assist inside our new Maker Space. This prototype Maker Space is named The Lab. The Lab aims to inspire visitors of all ages to make - using their hands, provided tools, and imaginations! Maker Space Facilitator Volunteers will test new experiential open-ended maker activities with the public inside The Lab.

Event Intern (Unpaid)
Pacific Science Center is partnering with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering & Surveying (NCEES) to implement a weekend full of hands-on experiments, interactive activities and live demonstrations for the public. Pacific Science Center's award-winning camps, exhibit and outreach programs and performances will be interspersed throughout Pacific Science Center's exhibit halls and courtyard fountains. The Event Intern will play a pivotal role in ensuring the exhibitor and guest experience is positive.
Promotions & Marketing Intern (Unpaid)
Pacific Science Center's award-winning, interactive programs reach more than 1.3 million people around the state each year — in their communities, classrooms and on our campus. Summer is particularly busy as our guest numbers rise and our presence at local events increase. The promotions demands within our Marketing department also rise in the summer. Our Marketing department has an exciting internship opportunity for a student interested in developing their promotions and marketing experience. This is a great opportunity for students who want to positively impact a nonprofit while exploring a career in Promotions and Marketing.
Volunteer Program Intern (Unpaid)
Pacific Science Center's 300+ volunteers are integrated into all seven Science Center Divisions. Volunteer roles vary greatly from behind-the-scenes office support to more visitor focused roles to virtual volunteering and more. All volunteers support the shared mission of inspiring a lifelong interest in science, math, and technology. In order to effectively manage volunteers, the Volunteer Program strives to ensure each volunteer has an accurate volunteer position description. The Volunteer Program intern will evaluate current position descriptions, as well as develop new ones.

What do Pacific Science Center volunteers do?
All of our volunteers are an important part of the Pacific Science Center team and contribute to our mission. Volunteering at Pacific Science Center is a fun way to share your passion for inspirational science learning. Each volunteer position is unique whether behind the scenes, hands-on, or interacting with visitors and exhibits.
Who can volunteer at Pacific Science Center?
All applicants must meet the volunteer position's individual requirements and complete the necessary application, pass a background and reference check, and be available to attend orientation. Volunteers must have no history of abuse or neglect against a child.
Are there age restrictions for volunteering?
Our adult volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. Teen volunteers must be at least 14 years of age. Each individual volunteer position has specific age requirements.
What are your internship program requirements?
Internships are offered on a rolling basis throughout the year. Internships have been offered in Accounting, Development, Human Resources, Marketing & Special Events, Information Services, Science Education and more. Internships are project-based and offered to current college and graduate students. Interning at Pacific Science Center is an exciting way to expand your professional skills, network with professionals, receive school credit and of course attain real-world experience. What is the application process for volunteers?
Once we receive your application, we will determine if your skills and availability match our current volunteer position needs. Qualified applicants will be invited to either an individual or group volunteer interview. Individuals invited to join the volunteer team will also complete a reference and background check. Once complete, volunteers are then invited to orientation and position training.
How much time does volunteering take?
The length and time commitment of each volunteer position varies. In general, we ask that volunteers commit to at least 2-monthly regularly scheduled volunteer shifts for 6 months. Some exceptions include positions which are seasonal, temporary, or offered on particular dates and times.

What experience or education do I need to volunteer?
Qualifications for each volunteer position vary. Orientation and training are provided to help volunteers learn the necessary volunteer position skills.
Do you offer one time or short term volunteer positions?
Most of our adult and teen volunteer positions are long term. Occasionally, special event volunteer opportunities may be offered and will be posted on our website.
Do you offer group volunteer opportunities?
If given enough notice, we can typically accommodate volunteer groups of 20 individuals or less. Group volunteer opportunities have included gardening, cleaning exhibit spaces, inventorying our educational materials, painting and more!
Are there opportunities for skill-based/pro-bono volunteers?
We welcome individuals or groups who would enjoy lending their professional expertise to Pacific Science Center. Past skill-based volunteers have offered graphic design projects, legal expertise, professional photography and more!
What are the benefits of volunteering at Pacific Science Center?
Volunteers not only receive the benefit of science learning and inspiration. Pacific Science Center volunteers have access to current and new exhibits, events, and more. Not to mention lots of fun!
