Why is America getting fatter?
It’s not because we’re eating more, but because we’re exercising less, according to new research from Stanford University School of Medicine. Especially women ages 18 - 39.

Turns out the past two decades have seen a striking drop in how much Americans exercise during their free time, and that correlates with a marked increase in obesity in both men and women.
From 1988 to 2010, the percentage of women who reported doing no exercise increased from 19 to 52 percent; the ranks of non-exercising men increased from 11 to 43 percent. During that period, obesity for both men and women increased to 35 percent.
Surprisingly, people did not report eating more in 2010 than in 1988. (Food intake was self-reported, however, so vulnerable to inaccuracy.)
Still, the takeaway remains the same: To prevent obesity and stay healthy, we’ve got to move.
Easier said than done!
Researchers surmise one of the reasons obesity has risen most among women between 18 and 39 is that this group includes single mothers who have a particularly challenging time fitting exercise into already hectic lives.
Here are three ideas to carve out exercise time:
• Recruit an exercise buddy who has child(ren) compatible with your child(ren). Switch off exercise and childcare time. (You watch all the kids while he/she exercise. The next time, your buddy watches the kids while you exercise.)
• Try star/sticker charts or exercise apps. Check out this post about free healthy-habit apps and sticker charts.
• Squeeze in short, intense workouts.
