The Reality of War in Outer Space
The United States Space Force (USSF) sounds like something straight out of science fiction, however its addition to the United States Armed Forces in 2019 signifies a new reality. The recent establishment of the USSF provides an opportunity to assess where outer space activities may be headed during our contemporary geopolitical flux. So how is the USSF situated in these unfolding realities, and what does it signify for war and peace?
To discuss, we’re joined by Dr. Saadia Pekkanen, co-founding Director at the University of Washington Space Policy and Research Center. She’ll explain the three deeply intertwined trends of the new space race that indicate a path towards conflict—democratization, commercialization, and militarization—with each trend presenting different problems for peaceful prospects in outer space. She’ll also explain why a clear understanding these problems, and their complex linkages, is vital as the USSF works to avert conflict in the years ahead.
