Thought Experiments on the Question of Being Human
Thought Experiments is an annual festival of four original short plays, each exploring some aspect of how current developments in science and technology may affect what it means to be human.
This year the Infinity Box Theater Project is collaborating with the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2). We have introduced four researchers from AI2 to local playwrights and, together they are writing four brand new plays.
AI’s in movies are typically single, powerful, possibly conscious entities that threaten us in some way. However, it is something much more ordinary–even mundane. But what happens when our daily world is full of things that are “smart?” What happens when our machines “understand?”
See fully staged readings of these original plays created by the following scientist and playwright collaborations:
- Dustin Schwenk and Maggie Lee (with director David Gassner)
- Matthew Peters and K Brian Neel (with director Meghan Arnette)
- Michael Schmitz and Andrew Lee Creech (with director Jose’ Amador)
- Oren Etzione and the writing team of Bret Fetzer and Juliet Pruzan (with director Rachel Katz Carey)
Each performance will conclude with our usual lively audience conversation, kicked off by one of the scientists from AI2.
