Model Railroad Show | January 14 – 16
Pacific Science Center welcomes back the Annual Model Railroad Show for its 43rd year, January 14-16, for three days of fun for the whole family. Spend your weekend learning about model railroading and the history of Pacific Northwest railways. Guests of all ages will experience hands-on activities and explore dozens of model railroad layouts.
Here are some activities to look forward to for the weekend event:
- Interactive Trains – Explore several layouts for children and adults to operate.
- Dozens of Miniature Layouts – Peek into the small world of model trains ranging from different types of locomotives to a variety of backdrops.
- Meet the Minds Behind the Models – Learn the tricks of the trade from expert mini-engineers who have been designing model layouts for decades.
Complete your visit with Rocky Mountain Express now playing in the Boeing IMAX Theater. Directed by award-winning Canadian filmmaker Stephen Low, Rocky Mountain Express propels audiences on a present-day steam train journey through the breathtaking vistas of the Canadian Rockies and relates the story of the building of the nation’s first transcontinental railway.
Admission to the event is included with general admission into Pacific Science Center, and FREE for Pacific Science Center Members.

2017 Model Railroad Show Exhibits
Whidbey Island Model Railroad Club
This switching layout gives visitors hands-on running of a switching locomotive.
Whidbey Island On30 Modular Group
This large scale layout features a narrow gauge flavor with a modeled logging camp.
Smokey Mountain Railroad Mini Train
National Event Pros children’s ride featuring several cars kids can ride on. (Located outside)
This HO scale layout is a hands-on layout that children can operate.
Northwest Railway Museum
This display has information and photos of the railroad museum located in Snoqualmie Washington.
Cascades & Western
This layout is an “N” scale layout that allows visitors to operate the trains. It has some sections that show how scenery and layout construction is done.
United Northwest Model Railroad Club
This “N” scale layout is a legacy modular layout. It features many detailed scenes and has complete scenery.
4-H T-Track Modules
This exhibit shows how compact modules are constructed and can be operated on a table-top.
This exhibit explains the aspect of grade crossing safety and general safety around railroads in general.
PNR 4th Division NTRAK Modular Group
This “N” scale layout follows standardized practices for producing a modular layout. The modules follow set guidelines so that they can be attached together whether it be 2 modules or 100 modules.
Baby Gramps Diorama
This is a unique display/diorama of very well detailed building and trains that are highly weathered and expertly crafted.
4D HO Modular Group
This HO scale layout features a many well detailed scenes. It follows the standard practices for modular design.
4D HO Kiddie Layout
This simple layout allows young visitors to run some HO scale model trains.
National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) Display
This exhibit allows visitors to ask questions about model railroading. The display also has information about the National Model Railroad Association and various aspects of what this organization does for the public.
This exhibit is part of an NMRA program to show the steps in constructing and operating a model railroad. There are experts available to answer all modeling questions.
