Proton Preschool

An innovative, STEM-based preschool at Pacific Science Center.

Proton Preschool is a STEM-based school year program of Pacific Science Center, held right under the arches in downtown Seattle. The program is play-based and for children ages 3 to 5. At Proton Preschool, science is used as the ideal catalyst for discovery and stimulation. Weekly themes and daily activities are designed to meet the developmental needs of early learners, while inspiring curiosity, cultivating a love for learning, and teaching basic science concepts – all while utilizing the incredible resources that Pacific Science Center has to offer.

Open Houses and Visits

Open Houses
Open Houses are offered in January, before the priority application deadline on February 16th. At an Open House, you have the opportunity to view the classroom, hear a presentation about our program and curriculum, and ask questions. All are welcome (children included). No RSVP is required. To attend an Open House, please enter at the Denny Way entrance only (entrance will not be granted at the main gates).

Visits are offered monthly on the first Monday of the month October through May at 1 p.m. Visits take place after school hours and last approximately 30 minutes. At a visit, you have the opportunity to explore the classroom and ask the teachers questions. Please RSVP to Kate Anderson at in order to reserve a spot for a visit. Visits are open to adults only.

Tuition, Registration & Program Details

2017-2018 Sessions:

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday session: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Thursday a.m. session: 8:15 – 11:15 a.m.
  • Tuesday, Thursday p.m. session: 12 – 3 p.m.


  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday session: $400/month or $3,600/year
  • Tuesday, Thursday a.m. session: $275/month or $2,475/year

Full tuition payment is encouraged prior to the first day of preschool. Families may also pay tuition in monthly installments via credit card. A non-refundable deposit equal to that of one month’s tuition will be due when enrolling your child; this deposit covers your May/June tuition.

Please note: To enroll, your child must be at least 3 years old and toilet-trained by the first day of school.

Class Size

Maximum class size for Proton Preschool is 14 students, with two educators in the class.

Learning Philosophy

Proton Preschool leverages science to facilitate powerful learning experiences through hands-on, play-based activities and investigations. We utilize scientific inquiry to develop children’s cognitive, social and emotional skills and provide them with engaging experiences designed to stimulate rich conversations with their surroundings and with each other. Our emphasis on cognitive and social experiences enhances each child’s lifelong learning skills while fostering respect for the world around them.

Meet the Proton Preschool Educators

Kate Anderson, Early Childhood Educator

Kate holds a Bachelor’s degree in humanities from Seattle University and a Master’s in Teaching from the University of Washington. She has worked in a variety of public and private schools ranging from preschool to middle school over the past seven years. Kate has worked for Pacific Science Center in other education roles including Camps for Curious Minds and Weekend Programs educator. Kate is a lifelong lover of the Pacific Northwest, and her favorite spots include the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery and the view of Lake Washington with Mount Rainier in the background. Kate is excited to focus on STEM education and early literacy as the Early Childhood Education Coordinator at Pacific Science Center.

Megan Sherman, Early Childhood Educator

Megan Sherman is thrilled to be working with Proton Preschool. Her love for all things science stemmed from spending many summers at science camps while growing up in New Jersey. One thing she loves about the Pacific Northwest and Seattle is its proximity to all things nature: the mountains, the forest and the Puget Sound! She especially enjoys spending time in Discovery Park. Megan was an educator at both the Seattle Aquarium and IslandWood: A School in the Woods, and has also been fortunate to develop programming at the Kids Discovery Science Museum and to be an assistant preschool teacher at Epiphany School. A recent recipient of a master’s of education from UW — Megan is beyond excited to share her passion for science at Pacific Science Center!

Apply To Proton Preschool

Pacific Science Center accepts applications for Proton Preschool on an ongoing basis. Applications received by February 16, 2018 will have priority for the 2018-2019 school year. Applications received after the specified due date will be added to the wait list.

  • Applications for the 2017-2018 school year must be submitted by February 16, 2017 and will be notified by March 1, 2017.
  • Applications for the 2018-2019 school year must be submitted by February 16, 2018 and will be notified by March 1, 2018.

Your child must be 3-years-old and potty-trained before their first day of school. Children who are potty-trained:

  • Know when they need to go with little or no prompting.
  • Handle most aspects of toileting with no assistance, including wiping.
