Do you Sudoku? It’s one of the hottest number games around! Well, here’s a twist we think you’ll love. We call it PacSci-Doku, can you guess why? Here’s how it works. Instead of filling in the blanks with numbers, use letters. Hidden in one of the columns or rows is the answer to a science question. The question in this edition is:

What has four wheels, two wings and fits in your garage?

To find the answer, complete this PacSci-Doku using the following nine letters:

I Y A R N L F G C

Each row and column in the grid below has to have only one of each of these letters. Each of the 3 x 3 mini-squares in the 9 x 9 square also needs to have only one of each letter.

Pacsci-Doku: Futuristic Transport Answer

The Answer

The Jetsons show everyone in 2062 traveling around in flying cars. That is less than 50 years away, so some inventors had better get busy if this current science fiction is to become a reality. Not that some scientists and engineers aren’t trying. Terrafugia in Massachusetts bills itself as a flying car company, and has developed the Terrafugia Transition. It has four wheels and wings, which fold up in just 20 seconds so the vehicle fits into your garage — assuming your garage will fit a large SUV. Its gas mileage is pretty good, at around 35 miles per gallon on the road and 20 miles per gallon in the air — although it requires premium unleaded gasoline. The Transition meets Federal Aviation Administration and Department of Transportation regulations, so it is legal to drive and fly it — but you still need a driver’s license to drive it, and pilot’s license and runway to fly it. Terrafugia is not the only company chasing the Jetson’s dream vehicle. AeroMobil has its own flying car, the AreoMobil 3.0, that it hopes to make commercially available in 2016. Maybe that Jetson science fiction can become a reality by 2062.
