By Dennis Schatz – Senior Advisor

Do you Sudoku? It’s one of the hottest number games around! Well, here’s a twist we think you’ll love. We call it PacSci-Doku. Can you guess why? Here’s how it works. Instead of filling in the blanks with numbers, we use letters. Hidden in one of the columns or rows is the answer to a science question. You’ll find information about the answer on the answer tab below.

The question in this edition is:

Ten thousand of what kind of animal is crawling around your home?

To find the answer, complete this PacSci-Doku using the following nine letters:

PacSci-Doku: More Than Bugs

Puzzle Difficulty: Hard

The Answer

PacSci-Doku: More Than Bugs

The question in this edition is:

Ten thousand of what kind of animal is crawling around your home?

The answer: Arthropod

We know that spiders, flies, lice, and maybe even some bed bugs, share our homes. Until recently, however, the exact numbers were not known. Researchers at North Carolina State University decided to change this by literally combing through 50 homes in the Raleigh, NC, area to count all the arthropods – creatures with external skeletons (exoskeletons) and jointed legs. They discovered more than 10,000 specimens that represent over 500 species of arthropods. Fortunately, these animals are typically overlooked, as they are usually small and mainly inhabit the hidden area around the edge of a room. Read more about how bug infested your house really is.
