The Answer

The question in this edition is:

What giant bug roamed the oceans 460 million years ago?

The answer: Scorpions

What was almost six feet long, lived nearly 500 million years ago, and was the primary predator in the ocean? Meet the 5 feet 7 inch scorpion that swam in the ocean that once existed in what is now Iowa. It was not really a bug, but a eurypterid, an extinct animal related to today’s spiders. Its legs were positioned to capture prey and direct them into its mouth. Unlike today’s scorpions, it did not have a stinger at the end of its tail, but used its tail for balance and mobility. Learn more about the various sea scorpions that inhabited the oceans millions of years ago.
