Pacific Science Center and NHL Seattle Team Up to Present the Science of Sports & Entertainment

Inaugural event on Feb. 26 will feature construction and design experts from Populous, ME Engineers and CAA ICON discussing the science and engineering innovations behind rebuilding the New Arena at Seattle Center

Seattle, WA (Feb. 19, 2019)Pacific Science Center (PacSci) and Seattle Hockey Partners (NHL Seattle) today announced the launch of a new series, The Science of Sports & Entertainment. This is an addition to PacSci’s Science in the City series of evening presentations and conversations. The joint series is the latest addition to a long-term partnership between PacSci, NHL Seattle and Oak View Group Seattle (OVG-Seattle).

The series starts on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. with a discussion on the unique architectural and engineering challenges associated with the New Arena at Seattle Center. The event includes a welcome reception for guests prior to the main lecture with guest speakers Geoff Cheong of Populous Architecture, Jeff Sawarynski of ME Engineers and Shaun Mason of CAA ICON.

During the series, partners of NHL Seattle and OVG-Seattle will deliver perspectives on arena design and construction; the physiology, nutrition, neuroscience, data science, physics and chemistry of sports and entertainment; and the engineering and technology that enable exceptional performances and audience experiences.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have a world-class arena being built right outside our front door and a partner who values community, learning, and innovation as much as we do,” said Pacific Science Center President and CEO, Will Daugherty. “The worlds of sports and entertainment provide unique and fun opportunities to ignite curiosity and explore science and technology. With the ever-growing interest in the New Arena at Seattle Center and the NHL Seattle franchise, we have a great chance to highlight the innovation they bring to our city.”

“Pacific Science Center is a celebrated Seattle institution and this partnership is a fantastic opportunity to bring our worlds together to show the science behind building a brand new arena, as well as what it takes to play hockey at a professional level,” said Tod Leiweke, CEO, NHL Seattle. “The first installment of the series showcasing the science behind the new arena project, from design and construction to the first sound check and puck drop, is the perfect way to kick off our new partnership. We look forward many more exciting programs and the opportunity to bring together fans of the Pacific Science Center and NHL Seattle.”

Open to the public, the series will take place every other month. Learn more and purchase tickets.
