Research Weekends At Pacific Science Center

Engineer It! Weekend

The very first Engineer It! Weekend took place August 22-23, 2014. Stay tuned for 2015 details!

Join us for Engineer It! Weekend, Pacific Science Center’s first research weekend dedicated to connecting professional engineers and surveyors with the public for hands-on exploration of the science that designs, moves, builds and powers our society.

Design circuits and bridges, concoct scented bath fizz and experience enormous outdoor explosions. You’ll be able to build a car with K’Nex materials. Calculate the length of your stride, then use a compass and map to find the “X” in a rollicking hunt for X-Marks-The-Spot. Ever wonder how an internal combustion engine actually works? You’ll get an up-close and personal look at one in action and learn the fundamentals driving its operation. Electrical engineers will help you experiment with lasers, lenses and prisms and learn the basic components of a battery by creating one with your hands.

Along with tons of hands-on activities and engaging professionals, guests will marvel at mechanical engineer and original host of the PBS television show Design Squad, Nate Ball. Nate will demonstrate his invention ‘The Ascender,’ a rope-climbing device used by soldiers and rescue workers, as he ascends to the apex of one of our five 110 foot-tall arches.

Engineer It! Weekend is presented in partnership with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). Admission is included with paid entry to Pacific Science Center and FREE for Members.

Polar Science Weekend

Polar Science Weekend

February 27-March 1, 2015

Investigate a real ice core from Greenland, survey microbes from the coldest parts of the world, compare an arctic ice camp with a research tent used in the Antarctic, take the salinity taste test and join a spectacular smashing ice demonstration as you meet and talk to polar researchers.

It’s all part of Polar Science Weekend, returning to Pacific Science Center for the tenth straight year on February 27-March 1, 2015. Presented in partnership with the University of Washington’s Applied Physics Laboratory, students, families and guests of all ages will enjoy three action-packed days of hands-on activities, demonstrations, exhibits and more – all transporting you into the extreme environments of the Arctic and Antarctic. You will also meet polar scientists who work in some of the most remote and challenging places on earth.

Polar Science Weekend is included with price of general admission – FREE for Pacific Science Center Members.

Polar Science Weekend is a partnership between Pacific Science Center and the University of Washington’s Polar Science Center and Applied Physics Laboratory, with additional support from the College of the Environment’s Future of Ice Initiative and the Quaternary Research Center.
