Types of Volunteer Opportunities

Teen Opportunities (age 13-17)

Guest Experience Volunteer

Age requirement: 16+
Shift and Commitment Information: Shift times are Saturday and Sunday 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. and 1:30-6 p.m. Commitment of at least one shift per weekend through Labor Day, but you are welcome to join us more frequently.

Help delight our guests by making every visit to PacSci a memorable and positive experience. The Guest Experience Volunteer greets our guests and answers any questions that they have about visiting Pacific Science Center. They are expected to help make recommendations for activities and events including IMAX movies, Laser Dome shows, and Virtual Reality experiences. The Guest Experience Volunteer should be comfortable with guest interaction, be enthusiastic, and have a positive attitude.

Guest Ambassador

Are you a friendly, outgoing and energetic person who enjoys interacting with the public? If you thrive on interacting with people and delivering a terrific guest experience we want to hear from you! Guest Ambassador Volunteers share their enthusiasm and ensure that guests feel welcomed and well-informed about our many programs and exhibitions, as well as assist guests in finding their way to key locations inside and outside of the Science Center.

What is Reality

Shift and Commitment Information: Available at least once per week during PacSci’s open hours, but you are welcome to join us more frequently.

Are you excited about cutting-edge technology, curious about technological innovation, and passionate about sharing and exploring these topics with the public? What is Reality offers our guests an opportunity to explore leading-edge immersive experiences that technological innovators will showcase throughout the Science Center. From gaming and cinema to medicine, architecture, and education, these technologies are undergoing constant innovation that is happening right in our backyard. What is Reality Volunteers spur discovery of the different approaches local scientists, engineers, and artists take to create the future and delve into existential and practical questions through active interpretation, education, and facilitation of virtual reality gaming stations. If you are open to new experiences, adaptable, available once a week, and interested in helping our guests explore our understanding of reality please mention your interest in What is Reality in your online volunteer application. Current Science Center volunteers are welcome to extend their Field Trip Ambassador, Guest Ambassador, and Science Interpretation Program volunteer role to include What is Reality; please discuss your interest in this extension role with your direct supervisor.

Science Interpretation Program

Shift and Commitment Information: Volunteer shifts are available seven days per week. Minimum time commitment is at least one half-day shift per week for 6 months, but you are welcome to join us more frequently.

Help ignite curiosity and welcome visitors into the amazing world of exploration at Pacific Science Center as a Science Interpretation Program (SIP) Volunteer. Travel to the tropics as you welcome and engage guests at our Tropical Butterfly House and explore the ecosystem of Puget Sound with visitors at the Salt Water Tide Pool. Share your passion for science and learning as you interact with guests of all ages. Explore math and patterns at Puzzle Place, defy gravity at the High Rail Bike, and discover cause and effect, colors, and more with our youngest guests at Just for Tots. Essential duties include direct interaction with the public, creating positive experiences for guests during their visit, and providing skilled and accurate interpretation of Pacific Science Center exhibits.

Tinker Tank

Shift and Commitment Information: Available at least once per week during PacSci’s open hours, but you are welcome to join us more frequently.

Do you enjoy sharing your passion for making things, tinkering with objects, building with mechanical parts, or experimenting with electronics? Pacific Science Center seeks creative volunteers to facilitate inside Tinker Tank, a space which aims to inspire guests of all ages to explore new ideas through hands-on design experiences – using their hands, tools, and imaginations.

Horticulture Exhibits

Shift and Commitment Information: Volunteer Shifts are 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Horticulture experience is not required – training is provided.

Pacific Science Center is home to several living exhibits that feature plants, including our most popular attraction, The Tropical Butterfly House. While these exhibits may appear effortlessly natural, they are supported by an enthusiastic team of Horticulture Exhibit Volunteers. Volunteers care for plants, keep exhibits looking beautiful, record citizen science data, and share exhibit science content with museum guests.
